Jo Thorpe

I am a multi media artist using a range of techniques and disciplines. These include pen & ink, screen printing, batik, resist, word and music. Often combining styles, and embracing the unfamiliar to achieve a style that I feel is very much my own. I am Inspired by natures colours and shapes, life's very personal journey, and I have been greatly influenced by the magical colours and truth shown in the Pre-Raphilite's work, the arts and craft movement and folk and Americana music of the 1960s and 70s. Music and songwriting has been a constant in my life and latterly i have been able to combine my visual art and music in the release of my first EP "Fallen Skies".

I am founding member of local music collective the Swanyard Songwriters group with whom I perform and record with through the ongoing support of Swanyard Music Studio (Retford) and the Reverb Project. I am a member of Retford Arts Society and enjoy attending the life class and showing my work in the yearly exhibitions.

Being part of the local creative community is very important to me and my work, as is collaboration with other artists. I feel inspired by the people around me and the support offered by the wonderful friends I have made through being part of these two diverse groups. I have exhibited and sold my work at Corby Glen, Harding House Gallery , Lincoln and Retford Libraries, Sheffield Great Art exhibition, The Botanical Gardens and Bassetlaw Museum.

In my current work I am drawing on the experiences and images from a recent trip to Galliano Island (one of the Gulf Islands) off the west cost of Vancouver Island ,British Columbia. It was a journey I have wanted to make all my life. Inspired by the Indigenous people of the west coat, Emily Carr, dreams and family I have been working in mostly pen and ink to creative a narrative to conjure a very special period of my life.

This work will form the backbone of my forthcoming exhibition at the Hub Retford running from 8th July to 19th August.
